TMJ Dysfunction
What is the TMJ?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a hinge-like joint that connects the jawbone (mandible) to the skull's temporal bone. It plays a pivotal role in various jaw movements, such as chewing, talking, and yawning.
The TMJ is a synovial joint, meaning it has a joint capsule filled with synovial fluid that lubricates and facilitates smooth movement. Additionally, it involves a disc that separates the bones and absorbs shock during jaw movements. The TMJ is essential for proper functioning of the jaw and is susceptible to disorders or dysfunction, leading to conditions known as temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD). Symptoms may include jaw pain, clicking sounds, and difficulty in jaw movement. Treatment options range from self-care practices to medical intervention, depending on the severity of the condition.
TMJ Dysfunction
When the joint mechanics of the TMJ become compromised, the ability of the articular disc to maintain space and support function of the jaw become diminished. This leads to inflammation and nerve irritation which can cause a wide variety of symptoms.
It is important for individuals experiencing symptoms of TMJD to seek medical evaluation for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. Manual soft tissue therapy is a crucial component to achieving muscle balance and sustainable results.
TMJD Soft Tissue Treatment
Manually restoring balance to the masticatory muscles is essential to total recovery of TMJD. Without proper balance of the tissues and articular surfaces, your nervous system can not recover from protection mode and will keep those muscles clenched, often during your sleep or in times of high stress. Without muscle release you are likely to experience perpetuation of your symptoms.
Cervical posture is also directly involved with proper function of the TMJ. Everyone who is receiving TMJ treatment will also experience a thorough workup of the muscles supporting the cervical spine. We believe that the body is a unit and muscular dysfunction is never hyper local.
